JUNE 2020 OVERVIEW
Crime decreased by 15% when compared to the previous month, with the decrease attributed to a decrease in break-in incidents (from 58 to 37).
Theft incidents increased by 24% whilst intrusion incidents remained constant. The increase in theft incidents is a possible marker of an increase in unskilled or opportunistic crime as the crime requires minimal skill to commit. Of the three (3) armed robbery incidents reported, one (1) incident of violence was reported in Ilanda whereby an individual was stabbed in the head.
In Harare, Msasa and Graniteside reported the most incidents in June 2020, whilst the Bulawayo City Centre reported the most in Matabeleland. Crime decreased in Mutare with Murambi reporting the most incidents in June 2020.
*Please note, a majority of the incidents received by Safeguard are from the Harare province as the statistics below reflect.
NATIONWIDE AND HARARE CRIME STATS
CRIME BREAKDOWN BY MONTH
HIGH-RISK AREAS
TARGETS
- Batteries
Batteries remain the most commonly targeted with Msasa reporting the most incidents in the previous month. Safeguard received reports of battery incidents outside Harare, a trend that is to be expected as suspects target less secure and much further sites.
- Fuel
Fuel remains a vulnerable target and sites that store large amounts of fuel or have large vehicle fleets should ensure that their premises are secure with restricted access to fuel storage areas and vehicles. All access to such areas should be logged and frequently checked.
- Cash
As more individuals move to safer ways of transporting and storing money, money was targeted less frequently in the past month. However, individuals should remain vigilant and desist from storing large amounts of money on site or on their person.
