AUGUST 2021 OVERVIEW

Crime increased by 25% between July 2021 and August 2021. Thefts doubled whilst break-ins remained constant during the same period. Criminals have been increasingly targeting vehicle batteries (industrial sites, especially Msasa) and gate motors (residential sites, especially Alexandra Park). The Safeguard Alarms response teams apprehended a number of suspicious persons in Alexandra Park in the past month. These could potentially be scouters considering the increase in thefts in the area.

Safeguard Security has also observed an increase in criminals removing durawall panels or digging under the durawall to access properties. Though Safeguard reported fewer armed robberies, criminals continue to target individuals known to carry or store hard currency. Two incidents of gunshots fired were reported in Emerald Hill and Highlands. The circumstances of these incidents remain unknown. In an effort to curb violent crime, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is urging the public to report any individuals known to possess or carry firearms.

Security Advice

  • Property owners are urged to install sensors at their gates and along their perimeter for early intruder detection.
  • Vehicle batteries, especially for trucks and generators should be caged to avoid easy theft. In addition, alarm sensors should be installed in these areas as well, i.e. car park, generator, depot etc.
  • CCTV monitoring has helped spot crimes in progress and as well as identify criminal suspects through CCTV playback. Business owners, especially those in the retail and industrial sectors should consider installing cameras on their properties. For technical assistance and quotations, please do not hesitate to contact Safeguard Alarms.

Outlook

With the relaxation of lockdown and the opening of schools, crime, especially theft, is likely to increase.

Schools should ensure that they have strict access controls onto their premises as well as a guard to man their car parks as theft from vehicles will increase.
For a walk-through of your security at home or business, please do not hesitate to give Safeguard a call. Your safety is our priority.
