Security Advice

  • Do not keep money on site overnight.
  • Install sensors on your verandas and always ensure the screen gates are always locked at night.
  • Ensure all keys, car keys, safe keys are kept in a secure area so that they are not easily accessible by criminals.
  • Avoid keeping safe keys on-site during the day and do not leave them on-site during the night.
  • Ensure to arm your alarm and lock your doors and close your windows as early as possible.
  • Check that nothing is obstructing your sensors before arming your alarm.
  • Do not leave tools lying around in your yard as they can be stolen or used as weapons against you.

Outlook

Crime is expected to remain high in January due to the increased cost of living. Additionally, the deportation of Zimbabweans from South Africa may result in further influence the crime rate as stranded people try to earn alternative means of living locally. The increase in crime will start with non-violent crime (break-ins, theft, trade of illegal goods) and gradually result in an increase in violent crime if unabated.

Businesses and residences should be more cautious as there is an increase in the threat of internal involvement when it comes to robberies and high-value thefts as employees try to supplement their incomes. Employers should vet individuals before employing them and ensure that there are systems in place to minimize internal theft. For example, conducting searches at exits and installing cameras in warehouses, factories, and around the perimeter.

For a walk-through of your security at home or business, please do not hesitate to give Safeguard a call before you go away for the holidays. Your safety is our priority.
