JULY 2020 OVERVIEW
Crime increased by 5% when compared to the previous month, with the increase in crime attributed to the increase in base station break-ins in Gweru, Midlands.
Robbery incidents and theft from vehicle incidents doubled, whilst break-in incidents increased by 30% and intrusions remained constant. Though crimes against businesses and residences remain prevalent, attacks against pedestrians were reported. More individuals reported incidents of being attacked either on duty, en route to work etc.
In Harare, Greendale was the most vulnerable area overall, with break-ins as the most prevalent crimes. Glenview also resurfaced as a high-risk area for base station break-ins. The Bulawayo City Centre reported the most incidents in Bulawayo, whilst Mkoba, Gweru reported an increase in break-in incidents.
*Please note, a majority of the incidents received by Safeguard are from the Harare province as the statistics below reflect.
NATIONWIDE AND HARARE CRIME STATS
CRIME BREAKDOWN BY MONTH
HIGH-RISK AREAS
TARGETS
- Fuel
Fuel remains a vulnerable target especially at base stations with Mutare, Midlands and Harare reporting an increase in base station break-ins. - Batteries
Batteries continue to be targeted at base stations and industrial premises. Vehicles should always be parked in well-lit and well-guarded areas, with alarms recommended for base stations in far flung areas. - Cellphones, Wallets and Personal Belongings
Individuals are urged to be vigilant when parking their vehicles in parking areas or travelling on foot as desperate suspects are not hesitant to either break into vehicles or assault individuals for the said goods.
MODUS OPERANDI
Large industrial sites should ensure that durawalls are always manned and that the property is well lit as durawalls remain the most commonly used access points. Warehouse roofs may be used to gain access onto premises and it is important that the access onto roofs is limited or even restricted.
SECURITY ALERT
- 29 July 2020, Belgravia Shopping Centre: One (1) individual was seen taking pictures of one (1) of the buildings. It is uncertain who had contracted the individual who stated that he was a freelance journalist.
- 22 July 2020, St Patricks Road, Hatfield: An unknown number of suspects parked a broken-down vehicle in front of the premises, and no communication was made with the property owner.
WHERE ARE WE HEADED ?
As criminals become more desperate, an increase in crime especially in thefts and property intrusions is likely to be reported. Property owners should ensure their properties are well-lit and that equipment such as pipes, motors, batteries, drums, irrigation equipment or taps are always securely stored away.
Personal security is also important and individuals are urged to be vigilant when driving or walking, especially if they are alone. It is important to have a panic button and keep it close in the event of an emergency.
Call the response team if you are nervous or see something out of the normal in your area, and be proactive in your approach. Report all criminal activity including attempts; an attempt for you can be a success for someone else.
If you would like to walk through your security at home or business, please do not hesitate to give us a call.
